Good Pub Guide launches a new generation mobile service
Random House’s Good Pub Guide today announced the launch of a pioneering new mobile
phone service, offering the growing number of UK mobile internet users the most advanced
and feature-rich pub finding service of its kind.
Good Guides has partnered with veteran software developer, Oxford Softworks, to offer a
Location Based Service (LBS) of the Good Pub Guide. The application, which uses Java
technology, will detect where a customer is located by the nearest phone mast providing
coverage. The ten nearest pubs listed in the 2008 edition of The Good Pub Guide are then
sent to the user. Users can also search by town name or postcode if known.
Advantages over other mobile listings include the speed and depth of information provided.
Maps, reviews, ratings, opening hours, menus (if applicable), pictures and contact details are
sent to the user in an extended page format and tabs that are easy and quick to navigate.
Maps, provided by streetmaps.co.uk, are available instantly and there is no need to bookmark
the URL as with WAP browsing or remember short codes and keywords associated with SMS
browsing.
The price structure is credit driven and more cost effective than other directory services. It will
cost 50p to download the initial application, which comes with 50 free credits. Users can then
purchase additional credits through the application. Depending on what level of information
you access for each pub, the amount of credits required will differ. Getting a list of 10 pubs
with a map will only cost around 20p, and a typical use costs between 50p and £1. The
equivalent cost for using SMS and WAP directories is £1 for typically only three options and
directory enquiries will cost around 50p for obtaining just one pub name and number.
Fiona Stapley, Editor of the Good Pub Guide comments: “However much you use the Good
Pub Guide, it is impossible to carry it with you everywhere you go. So to make sure that you
can always find your nearest good pub, we have introduced the Good Pub Mobile Guide.”
Calvin Hutt, Director of Oxford Softworks said: “This is a really exciting period of development
within the mobile internet arena. As more advanced handsets become the norm and Java
technology begins to become more widely adopted, we can expect more and more regular
users of mobile internet services. We have developed a brilliant and cost effective service for
anybody looking for a reputable pub whilst at home or away.”
Text the word GOODPUB to 87080 and then follow the prompts to download.
